Abia Governor Alex Otti Welcomes 66 Major Politicians to Labour Party in Ukwa West

In a significant political shift, Abia State Governor Alex Otti on Friday welcomed 66 prominent politicians and their supporters into the Labour Party (LP) in Ukwa West Local Government Area, a traditional stronghold of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from 1999 to 2023.

The defectors, hailing from the PDP, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and other parties, included notable figures such as Adinigwe Ugochukwu Nwoke, former Deputy Speaker; Ngozi Ulunwa, former Secretary to the Abia State Government; Ralph Egbu; Uche Nwaele; Ugoeze Ogbonna; and Lucky Ejiogu, alongside other grassroots politicians. The event took place at Obehie Central School in Ukwa West LGA.

Addressing the new LP members, Governor Otti expressed gratitude for their decision to join the party and urged others still hesitant to follow suit. “I truly welcome our new members and their followers. If there are a few more people who are still doubting, please let them know that they need to board the train before it leaves the station,” Otti remarked.

The governor outlined his administration’s commitment to restoring the dignity of Abia residents, announcing plans to construct a mini-stadium in Ukwa West. He directed the Mayor of Ukwa West to survey and fence the proposed site for the project. Additionally, Otti called on the Obehie community to support the establishment of a skills acquisition centre by Inner Galaxy company, urging resolution of disputes over the project’s location.

The acting Chairman of LP in Abia State, Nwaeze Oti, attributed the influx of new members to Governor Otti’s performance, noting that it continues to draw support for the party.

This mass defection marks a significant boost for the Labour Party’s influence in Ukwa West, signaling a potential shift in the region’s political landscape ahead of future elections.
