The Anambra South senatorial by-election, held to fill the seat of the late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, was marred by violence on Saturday. Tensions flared after four polling agents of APC candidate Sir Azuka Okwuosa were reportedly arrested in Ekwusigo by the local government chairman with the backing of a community leader.
The incident sparked protests from youths, who accused the APGA-led government of harassment and intimidation. Former Anambra Speaker, Hon Rita Maduagwu, also alleged that APGA operatives invaded her ward to disrupt voting.
The situation escalated across several polling units in Nnewi and Ekwusigo, forcing security operatives to intervene. While APC leaders claimed their members were being targeted, APGA’s National Publicity Secretary, Ejiomofor Opara, dismissed the allegations, insisting that “APC members were just claiming violence and arrests.
