At least 61 killed in Gaza as anti-war protests erupt in Israel

Dozens of people were killed in Gaza over the past day, officials reported Saturday, as protests erupted across Israel calling for an end to the ongoing conflict in the Palestinian territory and the release of hostages held by Hamas. The Gaza Health Ministry said 61 Palestinians were killed in the last 24 hours, with more than 300 others wounded, including at least four children.

The protests in Israel were organized by families of hostages still held by Hamas, estimated to number 49 people, including two Americans, with 22 believed to remain alive. Demonstrators gathered in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square starting at 8 p.m. local time, demanding that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu end nearly 700 days of conflict. A nationwide strike on Sunday drew several hundred thousand participants, with marches and events taking place in cities across Israel. Meanwhile, famine has been declared in northern Gaza, affecting over 500,000 residents, with numbers expected to rise above 600,000 in September, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification. Netanyahu has approved a ground offensive in Gaza while calling for urgent negotiations regarding the hostages.
