 Somali World Cup Referee Denied Entry to United States Award-winning Somali referee, Omar Artan, has been denied entry into the United States despite holding a valid visa, according to a senior official in Somalia’s sports ministry. Artan, who is set to become the first Somali referee to officiate at the FIFA World Cup finals, was stopped at Miami International Airport and subsequently returned to Istanbul, where he had been residing. The reason for the denial was not immediately disclosed. However, Somalia is among the countries affected by a travel ban introduced by the administration of Donald Trump. ‎Speaking to leaders from Owerri zone who paid him a courtesy call at Government House Owerri on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Governor Uzodimma also maintained that the person who must emerge as the governorship candidate in 2027 must follow a democratic process and not be handpicked by him.

‎

‎Governor Uzodimma stressed that “the process of selecting a (governorship) candidate must follow a purely democratic process,” and urged Owerri zone to carry other zones in the state along in their quest and desire for the governorship and “allow the will of God in all things.”

‎

‎He maintained that Imo State is desirous of selfless leaders and creative thinkers who are “committed to serving the people and making strong and informed leadership decisions that encourage development.”

‎

‎The Governor further encouraged the leaders from Owerri zone, and particularly those who may be aspiring for the governorship position in the state, to slow down on early campaigns since the election they are craving is still far, reminding them that only God can make the aspirations of human beings possible.

‎

‎He emphasised the need for them to divert their energies and resources to helping improve security, healthcare, and economic well-being of people in their various communities, insisting that the ongoing national campaign on “Health Insurance Scheme is real and effective.”
