 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity.  Man sentenced to life in prison for killing New Jersey pastor

Rashid Ali Bynum, 31, of Portsmouth, Virginia, was sentenced Monday to life in prison for the fatal shooting of New Jersey pastor Eunice Dwumfour outside her home in 2023. The courtroom in New Brunswick was filled with Dwumfour’s family and friends as the sentence was handed down. Bynum’s attorney has indicated plans to appeal the murder and weapons convictions.

Dwumfour, 30, was ambushed in her vehicle on Feb. 1, 2023, as she arrived at her apartment in Sayreville, where she also served as a council member. She was active in a Nigerian church, Champions Royal Assembly, and had married a fellow pastor in Abuja just weeks before her death. Prosecutors said Bynum had previously lived with Dwumfour and her child before returning to Sayreville and shooting her 14 times. He had been recruited into the church and a Bible study group that Dwumfour founded when they both lived in Virginia. Bynum later moved away after a falling out with the church. A jury convicted him in June following a month-long trial.
