South Africa has lost a legendary figure in the entertainment industry, as veteran actress Nandi Nyembe has passed away at the age of 75. With a career spanning over five decades, Nyembe left an indelible mark on the country's television, film, and theater landscape.
Known for her iconic roles in popular TV dramas such as Soul City, Yizo Yizo, Isibaya, and Zone 14, Nyembe was revered for her extraordinary gift for storytelling and her ability to bring authenticity to every character she portrayed.
Just a few months ago, Nyembe was trending on social media after making an emotional appeal for donations to support herself amidst health challenges and mounting medical expenses. She revealed that her financial difficulties were partly due to spending around R88,000 on medical treatment for her son. Despite her struggles, Nyembe expressed her preference for work opportunities over charity, stating, "More than anything, I want acting roles. Give me a script, and I'll prove my talent and mind remain sharp. "
The public and industry responded with kindness, donating funds and groceries to the veteran actress. Minister of Sport, Arts, and Culture, Gayton McKenzie, even reached out to offer support.
The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, and the Nyembe family released a joint statement, mourning her passing and celebrating her legacy. According to the statement, Nandi Nyembe was "more than an actress; she was the very soul of South African storytelling" and "carried our struggles, our laughter, and our victories through every performance with truth, dignity, and heart". Her grandson, Jabulani Nyembe, expressed gratitude for the outpouring of love and support during this difficult time.
Nandi Nyembe passed away at her home in Soshanguve, Pretoria.
