WAFCON CHAMPION, FRANCISCA MLUMUN ORDEGA, SAYS HER LATEST CONTINENTAL TRIUMPH IS “A COLLECTIVE VICTORY FOR BENUE AND NIGERIA” . (PHOTOS).

Super Falcons forward and five-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) champion, Francisca Mlumun Ordega, says her latest continental triumph is “a collective victory for Benue and Nigeria” as she was celebrated in grand style by Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia in Makurdi.

At a glittering dinner on Thursday evening at the New Banquet Hall, Government House, the governor hailed Ordega as “a shining example” and “an inspiration to every young girl in Benue and beyond,” recognising her as a sports ambassador who has consistently brought pride to the state and nation.

“We are singing the common national song of victory with one of us, whom God chose to represent us and bring pride to our land,” Alia said, urging parents to support girls who wish to pursue sports.

In appreciation of her achievements, Governor Alia announced that a street in Makurdi would be named after Ordega, alongside a N50 million cash gift and a three-bedroom flat in the city. He also presented N10 million to Coach Randy Waldrum for discovering and mentoring her.

Citizen Television Newsroom gathered that the  governor reiterated his administration’s commitment to reviving sports in Benue, citing ongoing renovations at Aper Aku and McCarthy stadiums, and pledged continued support for Lobi Stars FC.

In her remarks, Ordega expressed gratitude to the governor, the state, and her supporters, describing the 2024 WAFCON victory as a testament to perseverance, teamwork, and unity.

“This is not just my personal achievement but a collective victory for Benue and Nigeria,” she said, calling for more investment in women’s sports, infrastructure, mentorship, and scholarships for young girls.

She also pledged to work with the state government to promote sports development, education, health awareness, and community empowerment.

Benue State FA Chairman, Barr. Paul Edeh, praised Alia’s sports revival efforts, including bringing back the Governor’s Cup after 10 years with equal prize money for male and female categories. He conveyed goodwill from NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau, who lauded Ordega’s record of winning half of Nigeria’s 10 WAFCON titles and hailed the governor as “the most football-loving governor in Nigeria today.”

“Francisca Ordega has not only made Benue proud but inspired millions across Africa. Her story will continue to light the path for women’s football,” Edeh added.
