Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies weeks after removal from World Cup officiating list Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after FIFA removed him from its list of officials for the World Cup. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death in a statement, saying it was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Chinese landscape architect Kongjian Yu killed in a plane crash

Chinese landscape architect Kongjian Yu died Tuesday in a plane crash in Brazil’s Pantanal wetlands, authorities in Mato Grosso do Sul state confirmed Wednesday. Yu, 62, was traveling with the pilot and two local filmmakers when the aircraft went down near the town of Aquidauana. All four aboard were killed.

Yu gained international recognition for his “sponge city” concept, which uses nature-based solutions to manage water and reduce urban flooding instead of relying on concrete infrastructure. The approach has been widely adopted across China and in cities from the U.S. to Russia. President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva expressed sadness over Yu’s death, noting that his work combined environmental protection with improved quality of life, making him a global reference in addressing climate change.

Yu had recently participated in the opening program of the São Paulo International Architecture Biennale and was on a trip with filmmakers documenting his work. He founded and led Turenscape, a Beijing-based design firm with over 500 specialists, and established Peking University’s College of Architecture and Landscape, where he served as professor and dean.
