Stephen Colbert received a standing ovation and chants of “Stephen! Stephen!” on Sunday night after “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” won its first Emmy for Outstanding Talk Series. The win comes just two months after CBS announced it would cancel the show following the next season, citing financial reasons.
Colbert, who also received a standing ovation earlier while presenting the first Emmy of the night, joked, “Is anyone hiring? Because I've got 200 very qualified candidates here tonight who will be available in June.” After the win, he expressed gratitude to CBS, saying, “Thank you for giving us the privilege to be part of the late-night tradition, which I hope continues long after we’re no longer doing this show.”
“The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” had previously won its first Creative Arts Emmy last week. Colbert himself has a decorated Emmy history, having won 10 awards for his earlier work on “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.”
