 TROOPS ARREST SUSPECTED KIDNAPPER, RECOVER AK-47 RIFLE ALONG BENIN–SAPELE ROAD Troops of 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Operation WABAIZIGAN, have arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during a targeted operation along the Benin–Sapele Road in Ikpoba-Okha LGA of Edo State. The suspect, identified as Olamide Oyeniyi, was arrested on 12 September 2026 at Obaretin Community by troops conducting operations to disrupt criminal activities and safeguard major transportation routes within the area. Items recovered from the suspect include one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition. Other items recovered are one Tecno mobile phone, two bags, one torchlight, one music box and assorted charms.  Court to deliver judgment in Malema firearm case today


The East London Magistrate’s Court is expected to deliver judgment today in the case against EFF leader Julius Malema and his former bodyguard, Adriaan Snyman.


The two face charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a built-up area, and reckless endangerment. The charges stem from the EFF’s fifth-anniversary celebrations at Sisa Dukashe Stadium in Mdantsane on 28 July 2018.


Both Malema and Snyman have pleaded not guilty, claiming that the object discharged was a toy gun and not capable of firing live rounds. The state, however, maintains it was a real firearm, relying on evidence from 19 witnesses, including ballistics experts.


The case, which began in 2019, has experienced several delays, including one last year when the presiding magistrate fell ill.
