Nigerian Man Killed in Violent Clash During New Yam Festival in Abia State

A Nigerian man based in Vietnam, Samson Nwaubani, was fatally stabbed during a communal clash between the Okwu and Umuajata communities in Olokoro, Umuahia South Local Government Area, on Tuesday, August 27, during the annual New Yam festival. The incident, which has heightened tensions in the region, prompted the local government to suspend a traditional masquerade activity associated with the festival due to rising violence.

According to sources, the clash stemmed from a lingering dispute between the two communities, which escalated after a confrontation between residents degenerated into a fight. Tensions reportedly intensified when Okwu youths allegedly destroyed properties in Umuajata. On the day of the festival, Samson and other Okwu youths were ambushed by suspected Umuajata youths while heading to the celebration grounds. During the ensuing violence, Samson was stabbed in the neck and macheted in the arm, leading to his death on the spot. Several others were injured in the clash.

A source familiar with the incident revealed that elders had previously intervened to mediate the dispute and warned against actions that could escalate the situation. “The New Yam festival was ongoing when the fight broke out. Samson and some men from Okwu were attacked by Umuajata youths, and he bled to death after being stabbed,” the source said.

In response to the violence, the Umuahia South Local Government Area, led by Executive Mayor Chinedu Enwereuzo, convened an emergency peace and security meeting on Thursday with traditional rulers, security chiefs, and stakeholders. A statement issued by Enwereuzo announced the suspension of the Igba Ekpe masquerade activity linked to the New Yam festival until further notice, citing intelligence reports tying certain festivities to insecurity and criminal activities. The statement warned that violators would face legal consequences and urged community leaders to enforce compliance.

Enwereuzo emphasized the need for peace and unity, particularly in the Okwu and Umuajata communities, stating that the safety of lives and property remains a priority for his administration. Efforts to reach the Abia State Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, for comment on Monday were unsuccessful.

The suspension of the masquerade activity will be reviewed once security risks are addressed, while the local government pledged to promote cultural identity through safe and lawful means.
