 A Mother's Day Nightmare in Princeton, Illinois. A 3-year-old boy was struck by gunfire as police burst into a barricaded room, ending a frightening hostage situation. Multiple agencies responded to the Hummingbird Mobile Home Park in Princeton, Illinois, on Sunday, May 10th at 2:42 a.m. The initial call went out as a domestic disturbance but officers discovered much worse.  42-year-old, Anthony Rodriguez, had barricaded himself in a room armed with a knife. Anthony had taken several people as hostages, including Aurora Almanza and her 3-year-old son.  Multiple agencies were on the scene, including the Bureau County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police and  the Princeton Police Department.  Authorities attempted to negotiate but ultimately rushed the room when they heard screaming coming from inside.  Officials have reported that officers fired shots as they entered the room. The United States says it is proud to partner with Nigeria in empowering the next generation of leaders, innovators and change-makers.


Public Diplomacy Officer at the U.S. Embassy in Abuja,  Brian Neubert stated this at the 2025 Education USA annual College Fair holding in Abuja, stressing that the Embassy's Education USA team offers free counselling services to help prospective students navigate the application process.


He urged those to be found eligible for student visa, to responsibly maintain their student visa status by complying with all regulations in order to make most of their time in the United States, and bring back their cherished experiences in developing Nigeria. 


With the Theme: Empowering Future, Discover American Excellence In Education And Innovation, the Fair had representatives from 28 American colleges and universities in attendance, with over one thousand Nigerian students to explore their higher education opportunities in the United States.
