A Slovak court sentenced Juraj Cintula to 21 years in prison for attempting to assassinate Prime Minister Robert Fico in May 2024. Cintula, 72, had faced up to 25 years but received a reduced sentence due to his age.
During the attack at a political gathering in Handlova, Cintula fired five shots at Fico, striking him in the stomach, arm, and leg. Fico, 61, survived after emergency surgery. Cintula, a poet and activist opposed to Fico’s policies on Ukraine and other issues, told authorities he intended only to injure the prime minister to prevent him from serving. Prosecutors initially charged Cintula with attempted murder, later upgrading the charges to terrorism. Fico did not attend Tuesday’s hearing but was represented by an attorney. Cintula’s lawyer said the verdict will be appealed to Slovakia’s high court.
