A 30-year-old woman has been arrested after allegedly abandoning her newborn baby at a busy Manhattan subway station earlier this week, authorities confirmed. The suspect, identified as Assa Diawara, was taken into custody early Wednesday morning in Queens and charged with abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child.
Police said the infant girl was discovered Monday morning wrapped in a blanket on the southbound 1 train platform at 34th Street–Penn Station during the rush-hour commute. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and transported the baby to a local hospital, where she was reported to be in stable condition. New York City Transit President Demetrius Crichlow described the discovery as “the miracle on 34th Street,” noting the infant’s survival amid the heavy foot traffic and cold conditions in the station.
