 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York and strategic engagements in Germany.

During the week-long international engagement, the Vice President delivered President Tinubu's national statement calling for comprehensive UN reforms, championed Africa's sovereignty over its 700-billion-dollar mineral resources, and strengthened strategic partnerships with the United Kingdom, Gates Foundation, and other international stakeholders.

Shettima also met with the UN Secretary-General António Guterres and secured his commendation for Nigeria's bid for a permanent Security Council seat and in another engagement, showcased the country's 200-billion-dollar energy transition opportunity to global investors.

He also assured the Nigerian diaspora community of robust engagement in the President Tinubu administration's policies and programmes before his engagements in Germany.
