A brand new Star Trek movie is coming

Star Trek is preparing to explore entirely new territory on the big screen. Paramount has brought on Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley to write, produce, and direct a brand-new Star Trek movie. The duo previously helmed the 2023 hit Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and the 2018 comedy Game Night.

This upcoming film is described as “a completely new take in the Star Trek universe,” unconnected to any prior television series, movies, or earlier development projects. It is expected to introduce entirely new characters, though whether they will lead the story or play supporting roles has not been revealed.

The Star Trek franchise has seen a tumultuous decade in film. Following the 2016 release of Star Trek Beyond, plans for a sequel with returning cast members—including Chris Pine, Zoe Saldaña, and Zachary Quinto—shifted multiple times. Meanwhile, the franchise expanded on streaming platforms with shows like Picard and Strange New Worlds, sparking renewed interest and establishing a streaming renaissance. Rumors of a prequel focused on Starfleet’s earliest days and projects by Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley never came to fruition, leaving the franchise ready for a fresh direction under Paramount’s new vision.

Goldstein and Daley bring a mix of humor, nostalgia, and pop culture savvy to their projects, blending genres successfully in their prior films. Their next project, Mayday, is slated for release next year. The pair also contributed to the Tom Holland Spider-Man films, co-writing Spider-Man: Homecoming. Their background, including Daley’s acting days as Sam Weir on Freaks and Geeks, adds an extra layer of excitement for fans anticipating how they will handle this iconic sci-fi universe.
