 Okpoko Building Collapse: Ojukwu Condemns Illegal Structure, Orders Demolition ‎ ‎By Chukwuka Ugokwe ‎ ‎The Anambra State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Bar. Chijioke Ojukwu, has on Oct 8, described the collapse of a three-storey building under construction in Okpoko, Ogbaru Local Government Area, as unfortunate. ‎ ‎The incident, which occurred in the Anata Anaba area of the town, claimed the lives of a middle-aged woman and her 14-year-old daughter, amid allegations that warnings about the safety of the building had been ignored. ‎ ‎The victims, identified as Happiness Ugoagu and her daughter, Chikaima, were reportedly asleep in their bedroom when the building collapsed onto their residence. ‎ ‎Ojukwu, who visited the scene alongside officials of the ministry, alleged that substandard materials had been used in the construction. GOV. ALEX OTTI, SAYS THAT HIS ADMINISTRATION IS MAKING RENEWED EFFORTS TO IDENTIFY MINOR OFFENDERS IN CORRECTIONAL CENTRES ACROSS THE STATE FOR POSSIBLE PARDON AS PART OF YULETIDE INTERVENTIONS.(PHOTO).

 Governor Alex Otti, says that his administration is making renewed efforts to identify minor offenders in correctional centres across the state for possible pardon as part of yuletide interventions.


He said that he recently met with the Zonal Commandant of the Nigerian Correctional Service and reviewed ongoing support for facilities in the state.


“Even though it is a federal agency, our people are the ones affected. So, we decided to protect the entire place by erecting perimeter fences, and we are building a one-storey holding centre to decongest the cells. The idea is not to keep more people there, but to ensure that those who enter the centre do not come out as hardened criminals”, he explained.


“In the last two years, I made attempts to grant pardon to minor offenders using the prerogative of mercy, but we couldn’t find any. All the 1,900-plus inmates had serious offences. I have asked the Zonal Commandant to look into it again to see if there are people who can be considered as we mark the end of the year”, he added.


The governor also appealed to residents to remain security-conscious throughout the festive period.
