Sanwo-Olu hails President Tinubu, Minister Oyetola on Nigeria’s Return to IMO Category C

The Lagos State Government has congratulated President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR and Marine and Blue Economy Minister Adegboyega Oyetola on Nigeria’s remarkable return to Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council.

In a congratulatory message issued on behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu described the achievement as a historic reaffirmation of Nigeria’s growing influence and credibility within the global maritime community.

Nigeria on Friday reclaimed its seat on the IMO Council after securing a decisive victory in the Category C election for the 2026–2027 biennium. The election, held during the IMO General Assembly in London on November 28, marks the country’s first return to the Council in 14 years.

Governor Sanwo-Olu applauded President Tinubu for providing the national leadership that strengthened maritime governance and bolstered international confidence in Nigeria’s maritime reforms. He noted that the achievement reflects the administration’s commitment to repositioning the maritime and blue economy sectors as major drivers of national development. Besides, it is a reaffirmation of the bold reforms the President has deployed to return the economy to stability. “The results are here for all to see and feel,” Sanwo-Olu said.

The governor commended Mr Oyetola, CON, who led Nigeria’s delegation and spearheaded more than a year of global diplomatic engagements that resulted in the successful election.

“Dr. Oyetola’s tireless efforts, strategic diplomacy, and clear vision for Nigeria’s maritime future were instrumental to securing this victory. His leadership continues to elevate the nation’s standing in international maritime affairs,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said.

According to details from the IMO election, Nigeria’s win is seen as a strong endorsement of the country’s improved maritime security architecture, enhanced regulatory reforms, and renewed commitment to global maritime cooperation under President Tinubu’s administration.

The Lagos State Government expressed optimism that Nigeria’s reinstatement to the IMO Council will further unlock opportunities for investment, enhance port efficiency, and deepen the state’s ongoing efforts to build a resilient and globally competitive maritime ecosystem.

Governor Sanwo-Olu pledged Lagos State’s continued support for federal initiatives aimed at advancing maritime safety, blue economy growth, and sustainable development across the nation’s waterways.
