HONDA RECALLS OVER 400,000 VEHICLES DUE TO RISK OF WHEELS DETACHING. (PHOTO).

Honda recalls over 400,000 vehicles due to risk of wheels detaching

Honda is recalling more than 400,000 Civics due to a potential safety issue with some accessory wheels that could detach while driving.

The recall covers Honda Civics from model years 2016 through 2021, according to a Nov. 6 notice from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). While 406,290 vehicles are included, Honda said only 3,276 of the 18-inch aluminum alloy accessory wheels sold in the U.S. may have been improperly manufactured.

Honda is recalling all affected vehicles so dealers can inspect the wheels and replace hubs or wheels as needed, free of charge. The automaker explained that the steel lug seat inserts in the accessory wheels may not have been installed correctly. This can cause the lug nut seating surface to deform over time, potentially loosening the wheel nuts and allowing a wheel to come off, which could increase the risk of a crash or injury.

Honda has not received any confirmed reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed starting Dec. 8, 2025. Vehicle owners can also contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138.

The recall affects the following Honda Civic models:

2016 Honda Civic

2017 Honda Civic

2018 Honda Civic

2019 Honda Civic

2020 Honda Civic

2021 Honda Civic

NHTSA estimates that only about 0.1% of the recalled vehicles will have wheels that need replacement. The problem was traced to a supplier factory in Italy, where a removed fence during equipment installation caused some unfinished wheels to be mistakenly stored as finished products, skipping a critical step in the manufacturing process.
