 Atiku pledges scholarship to viral Niger teen miner Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said his “heart breaks” each time he watches a viral video of a teenage artisanal miner, Yusuf Aliyu, speaking at a mining site in Niger State after the deaths of 37 miners in the state. Atiku, in a statement posted on his X handle, said he was prepared to support the boy’s education, describing him as a child whose intelligence and confidence should be nurtured in a classroom rather than by working at a mining site. “I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks. A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty. “I cannot look at him and see an ‘illegal miner.’ I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him.  Makatu Man Arrested for Brutal Murder of Girlfriend and Attempted Murder of Her Daughter 


South Africa: A 48-year-old male suspect is expected to appear before the Dzanani Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 05 November 2025, in connection with the brutal murder of his 47-year-old girlfriend and the attempted murder of her 16-year-old daughter at Makatu Village in the Siloam policing area under the Vhembe District. The incident occurred on Monday morning, 03 November 2025.  


The suspect was swiftly arrested on Tuesday, 04 November 2025, at Biaba in Makhado during a joint operation conducted by members of the Siloam Detectives and Makhado Police, following intelligence received about his whereabouts.  


It is alleged that the suspect forcefully entered the home of his girlfriend while she was asleep with her children. According to information, the 16-year-old girl woke up to her younger sister’s screams and found her mother being attacked by the suspect, who was known to them. When she tried to intervene, the suspect allegedly stabbed her several times before fleeing the scene.  


Police were called to the scene and discovered the lifeless body of the 47-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds. Her daughter was rushed to a local hospital where she is receiving medical treatment.  


Further investigation revealed that the suspect is a repeat offender, and police investigations are continuing.
