As tensions heighten in the Southeast geopolitical region over the November 20, 2025 delivery of the judgment on the leader of Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s case, a youth group in the region, the South East Youth for Good Association Integrity and Inclusiveness (SEYGAII) has declared that the only option available for the restoration of peace in the region is the release of the IPOB leader.
In a statement made available to newsmen in Umuahia on Monday, the chairman of SEYGAII, Dr Silas Eke, contended that despite convergent opinions surrounding his activities, it is clear that he remains a central figure whose continued incarceration has constantly heightened tension, restiveness and uncertainty in the Southeast Region.
“Your Lordship, it is widely recognised that the prolonged detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has had a far-reaching, emotional, and socio-economic effect on the people of the South East Region"
“We believe that his release, through any lawful discretion available to the honourable court, would significantly contribute to restoring calm, encouraging constructive dialogue and reducing agitation"
“His release would not only help to build trust between the citizen and the state, but would also serve as a gesture towards healing, reconciliation and national unity"
“Your Lordship, we make this appeal with a deep sense of humility and with full respect for judicial independence. We do not seek to influence the due process of the law, but to present broader humanitarian and societal implications. We are confident that Your Lordship, in your wisdom and sense of justice, will consider these factors as you deem fit and proper within the bounds of the law”, Dr Eke, who is also a pro-democracy activist in Abia State, counselled."
The statement, which was also signed by a Umuahia-based structural engineer, Engr Iheanyi Asiegbu, on behalf of the Secretary, argued that Nigeria right now stands at a delicate moment where every act of fairness and compassion by the judiciary would strengthen its unity.
