ALBUFEIRA, PORTUGAL - A tornado tore through a campsite in Albufeira, Portugal, killing an 85-year-old British woman and injuring several others, authorities said. The storm, described by officials as a “mesocyclone tornado,” left structures destroyed and debris scattered across the affected area.
The twister was caught on video by a local resident who happened to be on a nearby rooftop as it struck. Dozens of people were reported injured in the chaos. Portugal’s meteorological agency had issued an orange alert for heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area shortly before the tornado hit. While tornadoes are far less common in Europe than in the U.S., they do occur, with France ranking fifth in Europe for tornado frequency according to a 2017 study in the American Meteorological Society journal. The study also noted that few European meteorological offices maintain comprehensive tornado databases.
