 The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday.  Trump pardons billionaire Joe Lewis, former Tottenham owner

President Donald Trump has granted a pardon to billionaire Joe Lewis, whose family holds a majority stake in the English soccer club Tottenham Hotspur.

Lewis, 88, pleaded guilty to insider trading in 2024 and was fined $5 million by a New York judge. He received three years of probation but no prison sentence. The pardon reportedly took into account his age and the fact that he did not personally profit from the scheme.

The pardon clears the way for Lewis to travel to the United States for the first time since his conviction, allowing him to seek medical care and visit his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. “I am pleased all of this is now behind me, and I can enjoy retirement and watch as my family and extended family continue to build our businesses based on the quality and pursuit of excellence that has become our trademark,” Lewis said in a statement.

Lewis has had limited involvement with Tottenham since 2022, when he transferred majority ownership of the club to his family through a trust. His pardon adds to a growing list of wealthy individuals convicted of financial crimes who have received clemency from Trump during his second term.
