104-YEAR-OLD EX-LAWMAKER IN TARABA NOW LIVING AS AN IDP

12th December, 2025

Hon. David K. Mtuem JP, a respected statesman who served two terms representing Bantaje Constituency in the Gongola State House of Assembly during the Second Republic, now lives a reality far removed from the influence he once wielded.

Mtuem, who served between 1979 and 1983 under the banner of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) was a key voice on several committees, including House Services, Business & Rules, and Finance. Bantaje, then part of Wukari LGA in the old Gongola State, predates the creation of Taraba State.

Today, at 104 years old, the former lawmaker finds himself in an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp.

A man whose forebears farmed the land for over a millennium is now labeled a “stranger” on the very soil he once represented.

His story captures a painful symbol of displacement, how history, legacy, and belonging can be upended in a lifetime.
