 Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years. WhatsApp chats have been encrypted since 2016, and the company began rolling out default encryption for Messenger in 2023. In a show of force, operatives of the outfit held a special parade in Awka to showcase their preparedness for the festive season and unveiled new sets of uniforms aimed at preventing infiltration and impersonation of its operatives.


Speaking while supervising the exercise, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Community Security, Chief Ken Emeakaiyi, said Governor Chukwuma Soludo is determined to ensure that Anambra State remains the safest and most secure state in the South-East and Nigeria at large, and will soon unveil state-of-the-art security equipment, including sophisticated security drones capable of maintaining effective surveillance across the state, stressing that Agunechemba’s operations are now technology-driven


Ahead of the Christmas and New Year festivities, the Anambra State security outfit, Agunechemba, has intensified preparations and capacity building to ensure effective and efficient protection of lives and property.


Chief Emeakaiyi explained that Agunechemba has approved sets of uniforms for all operatives across the state, including community operatives’ uniforms, warning that anyone wearing anything outside the approved uniform is an impersonator and should be reported to Agunechemba for prompt action, while thanking Governor Soludo for giving them the opportunity to serve the state and the security agencies for their tireless efforts in keeping the state peaceful and secure, and assuring them that Agunechemba will continue to complement their efforts by providing needed intelligence.


He used the opportunity to demonstrate the capacity of one of the security drones.
