Broadway alum Imani Dia Smith dies at 25

Imani Dia Smith, a former Broadway child actress known for her role in The Lion King, has died at 25.

Smith was found with stab wounds inside a home in Edison, New Jersey, on Sunday, Dec. 21, after authorities received a 911 call reporting a stabbing. She was taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick, where she was pronounced dead.

Her boyfriend, 35-year-old Jordan D. Jackson-Small, was arrested Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child, and multiple weapons offenses. Officials said the two were acquainted and the incident was not random.

Smith is survived by her 3-year-old son, her parents, and two younger siblings. In an online fundraiser organized by her aunt, Kira Helper, the family described Smith as “a vivacious, loving and fiercely talented person” and a “true triple-threat performer” who played Young Nala on Broadway from 2011 to 2012. Proceeds from the fundraiser are intended to help cover funeral and memorial expenses, trauma therapy, legal costs, and care for Smith’s son. The fundraiser had raised more than $46,000 as of Wednesday.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and urged anyone with information to contact the Edison Police Department or the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office.
