 The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday.  Machado's daughter receives Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of Venezuelan opposition leader

The daughter of Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo on Wednesday on her mother’s behalf, delivering a speech emphasizing the fight for freedom in her country. Machado has been in hiding since January, following a brief detention during a protest in Caracas, and was unable to attend the ceremony in person due to safety concerns.

At the ceremony, Ana Corina Sosa, Machado’s daughter, read a message from her mother, saying, “She wants to live in a free Venezuela, and she will never give up on that purpose.” The Nobel committee confirmed Machado’s safety, noting that she had made every effort to attend despite extreme danger. Machado recorded an audio message expressing gratitude to those who risked their lives to facilitate her participation and noting that the award is for all Venezuelans. Prominent Latin American leaders, including the presidents of Argentina, Ecuador, Panama, and Paraguay, attended the ceremony to show solidarity. The Nobel committee praised Machado’s courage in standing against Venezuela’s authoritarian government, highlighting her efforts to achieve a democratic transition despite being barred from last year’s presidential election.
