 Tragedy Averted as 120-Year-Old Ancestral Tree Falls at Obosi Market By Chiedu Okoye A major tragedy was averted at Eke Obosi Market in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State after a 120-year-old ancestral tree collapsed, destroying shops and goods but leaving traders and visitors unharmed. The massive tree, estimated to be about 150 feet tall, fell within the market premises, damaging at least 12 shops and valuable merchandise. Residents and traders described the incident as miraculous, noting that no lives were lost despite the extent of the destruction. The fallen tree held significant cultural importance as a sacred symbol of Eke Obosi Market, which is regarded as a stronghold of the traditions and cultural heritage of the Obosi people. Beyond serving as a centre for commercial activities, the market is also known as a venue for communal traditional rites and ceremonies.  Makhuva Sangoma Shot Dead in Ka Nwakhuwani Village


 An 80-year-old elderly man, known in the community as a traditional healer (sangoma), was shot and killed at Ka Nwakhuwani village outside Giyani.


 The incident occurred on Saturday night, 13 December 2025. The deceased originally resided in Makhuva village but later relocated due to past community tensions.


 About ten years ago, a young man in Makhuva village died after being struck by lightning, and some community members accused the sangoma of being responsible. Following the accusations, he left Makhuva village and settled in Ka Nwakhuwani.


 On the night of the incident, an unknown man visited the victim’s home, claiming to be a police sergeant. The victim reportedly came out of his house to attend to the visitor. The suspect then allegedly shot the elderly man outside his yard. The victim was declared dead at the scene.


 The motive for the shooting remains unknown, and the suspect fled the scene. Police have opened a murder case and investigations are ongoing.
