PUTIN AND MODI MEET, ANNOUNCE EXPANSION OF RUSSIA-INDIA TRADE TIES DESPITE U.S PRESSURE. (PHOTO).

Putin and Modi meet, announce expansion of Russia-India trade ties despite US pressure

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Friday at the 23rd Russia-India Summit in New Delhi, agreeing to expand economic and strategic ties as the United States pressures India to reassess its long-standing partnership with Moscow. The summit highlights India’s efforts to balance relations with both Russia and the West amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The leaders announced a new economic cooperation program running through 2030, aimed at diversifying bilateral trade and boosting annual commerce to $100 billion. Energy cooperation remains a cornerstone of the partnership, with Russia pledging uninterrupted fuel supplies to support India’s growing economy. Bilateral trade totaled $68.7 billion in the last fiscal year, with India seeking to narrow its trade deficit by increasing exports. Putin also noted progress on a potential free trade zone between India and the Russia-led Eurasian Economic Union.

Modi announced upcoming initiatives to facilitate travel, including free electronic visas for Russian tourists, and emphasized long-standing civil nuclear cooperation. Both leaders committed to collaboration in clean energy, shipbuilding, fertilizers, labor mobility, and military-technical cooperation, including accelerated deliveries of S-400 missile systems and upgrades to India’s Su-30MKI fighter jets.

While India has historically maintained strong ties with Russia, the visit could strain its relations with the U.S. and EU, especially given ongoing sanctions on Russian energy imports and the impact on India’s trade negotiations. U.S. officials have criticized India’s purchase of discounted Russian oil, citing concerns it helps fund Moscow’s military efforts in Ukraine. India maintains that it complies with international sanctions while seeking to strengthen its strategic and economic interests.

Experts note that India is navigating a diplomatic balancing act, seeking to maintain its historic partnership with Russia while deepening ties with the U.S. and EU. In addition to defense agreements, both countries are exploring expanded trade in pharmaceuticals, agriculture, textiles, and fertilizers, as well as agreements to ensure the safe migration of skilled Indian workers to Russia. Putin’s visit follows his 2021 trip to India, Modi’s 2024 visit to Moscow, and a brief meeting between the two leaders at a September Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit.
