Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies weeks after removal from World Cup officiating list Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after FIFA removed him from its list of officials for the World Cup. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death in a statement, saying it was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Dieperink was arrested in April by the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom following a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a teenage boy in London. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said officers responded on April 9 to a report of sexual assault at an address in Croydon and arrested a man in his 30s on suspicion of the offence. UKRAINE HOLDS ON TO FINAL EASTERN STRONGHOLDS AS RUSSIA PUSHES TO CAPTURE DONBAS . (PHOTO).

Ukraine holds on to final eastern strongholds as Russia pushes to capture Donbas

In Kramatorsk, one of the last Ukrainian-held cities in eastern Donetsk, life grows increasingly dangerous as Russian forces push closer. Over the past month, local officials have reported numerous attacks using strike drones, rockets, ballistic missiles, and aerial bombs, hitting homes, markets, gas stations, and a nearby power plant, causing widespread blackouts. Residents feel the frontline drawing nearer, aware that their safety depends on how Ukrainian forces hold the line.

The Kremlin continues to press for control over all of the Donbas region, which includes Donetsk and Luhansk. Russia has occupied more than 80% of the area since 2014 and seeks to capture the remaining territory either through military action or a negotiated settlement. Ukraine has rejected any deal ceding land. Russian troops claim momentum on the battlefield and have formed specialized drone units to challenge Ukraine’s previous advantage in unmanned warfare.

The small city of Pokrovsk has been a focus of intense fighting, serving as a key supply route for Ukrainian forces. Russian forces have been attempting to advance for over a year, facing heavy urban resistance. Ukrainian soldiers report the city is heavily damaged, with constant drone activity complicating defenses and causing significant losses to unmanned ground vehicles. Analysts warn that the fall of Pokrovsk could weaken Ukraine’s leverage in any potential negotiations.

Meanwhile, residents in Kramatorsk continue their daily life amid repeated strikes. Markets remain open, with vendors determined to stay despite the risk, asserting they will not abandon their homes. Many have already been displaced multiple times due to the conflict and remain skeptical of any Russian promises, fearing continued attacks if Ukraine relinquishes territory. The determination of civilians and soldiers alike underscores the high stakes as Russia presses its campaign in eastern Ukraine.
