VIO OFFICERS IN MAKURDI ACCUSED OF DEFYING COURT ORDER, HARASSING MOTORISTS

5th December, 2025

Residents in Makurdi are raising fresh concerns after Vehicle Inspection Officers were reportedly seen stopping cars and issuing fines despite a recent Court of Appeal ruling barring such roadside operations.

The incident happened Friday near Padopas School in High Level, where witnesses say VIO personnel set up an unmarked checkpoint, impounded vehicles, and demanded payments without any official patrol vehicle present. The move has sparked anger among motorists, who described the operation as unlawful and dismissive of the court’s directive.

“This is a criminal offence after yesterday’s Court of Appeal judgement,” a witness said, urging authorities to step in and stop what many now call an “illegal levy” on drivers in Benue State.

Concerned citizens are calling on the Benue State Commissioner for Transport and other enforcement bodies to investigate the officers’ conduct. They are also appealing to Hon. Gbenda Terver to intervene swiftly and end the alleged illegal operations.
