Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing.  Awka South Mayor pleads with Awka indigenes in Diaspora to Support and collaborate with governor Soludo in promoting Anambra state.


The Mayor of Awka South Local Government Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, has called on Awka indigenes in the diaspora to collaborate with the Anambra State Government in promoting inclusive growth and sustainable development, particularly within Awka communities.


Prince Okafor made the appeal during the handover ceremony of 50 hospital beds donated by the Awka Union in Houston, Texas, to the Chukwuma Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOU), Amaku. He described the donation as timely and impactful, noting that it reflects the union’s strong commitment to community wellbeing and improved healthcare delivery.


The Mayor emphasized the importance of collective responsibility and strategic collaboration, stressing that diaspora-led initiatives play a critical role in complementing government efforts to strengthen key public institutions.


Reaffirming his commitment to people-centered governance, Prince Okafor restated the determination of the Awka South Local Government to deepen the Public-Private-Community Partnership (PPCP) framework as a key driver of sustainable development and long-term prosperity in the area.
