LAGOS SDG OFFICE MOVES TO TIGHTEN PERFORMANCE REPORTING THROUGH PEER REVIEW

The Lagos State Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has taken steps to strengthen accountability and results-based governance with the convening of a Peer Review Mechanism (TPRM) Milestone Strategy Session aimed at improving programme and project performance reporting across the Office.

The session, held on January 22, 2025, at the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Ikeja, brought together management staff of the Office of SDGs, members of the Technical Peer Review team, and officials from the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget.

Opening the session, the Permanent Secretary, Office of Sustainable Development Goals, Mrs. Kaphayah Olayemi Sarumi, said the engagement was designed to reinforce Lagos State’s commitment to accountability, transparency and measurable outcomes, in line with the development agenda of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu.

Mrs. Sarumi noted that effective governance increasingly depends on credible data, clear performance benchmarks and robust reporting systems that demonstrate real impact and value for public funds.

She stressed that the SDGs Office plays a central coordination role in tracking, evaluating and reporting government interventions in line with state priorities, national frameworks and global commitments.

According to her, the Peer Review Mechanism provides a structured platform to assess data quality, improve inter-agency collaboration and ensure that reports submitted to the highest levels of government accurately reflect progress and outcomes.

“This is not just about reviewing templates,” she said. “It is about strengthening our reporting culture so that executive decisions are based on factual progress, clear targets and measurable impact.”

She urged participants to approach the exercise with professionalism and openness, particularly in addressing data gaps, improving consistency and adopting best practices that will enhance the credibility of reports.

The technical sessions featured presentations by officials from the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget. Mr. Kadiri, Chief Planning Officer, led a presentation on the use of the Medium-Term Sector Strategy (MTSS) as a tool for aligning government objectives with the Sustainable Development Goals and establishing benchmarks for performance evaluation.

In a second presentation, Mr. Adegoke Ariyo, also a Chief Planning Officer, spoke on the Performance Management Review Framework, highlighting the role of clear Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) in tracking project implementation and ensuring accountability for public expenditure.

Also speaking, the Head of Planning Unit, Mr. Salu Yakubu, encouraged participants to translate the outcomes of the strategy session into concrete actions that would strengthen monitoring, evaluation and reporting processes within the Office of Sustainable Development Goals.
