The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday.  MAKURDI LG CHAIRMAN CONDEMNS ATTACK ON RICE MILL YOUTH LEADER BY SUSPECTED CULTISTS

9th January, 2026

Makurdi Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Joseph Keffi, has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Rice Mill Youth Leader, Mr. Benjamin Aondowase Terver, by suspected cult members.

The incident occurred on Friday, January 9, 2026, at Mr. Terver’s residence in Wurukum, where he sustained gunshot injuries to his hand and leg. The attack reportedly happened as he prepared to attend a security meeting called by Wurukum Kindred Head, Chief Simon Ugondotov, following the killing of three young men by suspected cultists on January 7.

In a statement via his Special Adviser on Security and Political Matters, Hon. Beetseeh Terhide Mark, Hon. Keffi described the attack as “barbaric, senseless, and unacceptable,” and decried the rising wave of cult-related violence in the Local Government Area.

He urged youths to shun criminal and cult activities and called on residents and community leaders to stay vigilant, reporting suspicious activities promptly to security agencies.

Investigations are ongoing to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.

Mr. Terver is currently receiving treatment at a public hospital in Makurdi.
