Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing. Markazi refugee village, designed for 5,000 people, was already hosting more than 2,700 Yemenis and 1,500 Eritreans. More than 100,000 people have also been displaced ins...

SHOCK DEMOLITION HITS BENUE LINKS AS OFFICES, VALUABLES CRUSHED WITHOUT NOTICE

30th January, 2026

Anger and frustration erupted on Friday following a sudden demolition exercise carried out in front of the Benue Links Park, Makurdi, which left several business owners counting heavy losses.

The exercise, which eyewitnesses say was executed without prior notice, affected newly acquired office spaces and business containers operating around the park. Victims described the development as traumatic, noting that valuables were still inside the structures when they were pulled down.

One of the affected traders said his newly acquired office frontage was demolished without warning, leaving him shocked and helpless. “It was not funny at all. There was no notice, no chance to move our things,” he lamented.

Several mobile phones and other valuable items were reportedly crushed during the exercise.

Particularly hard hit was a container belonging to one Iorember Batholomew, which was being prepared as a standard mini office.

The container was completely destroyed, along with two cartons of Point-of-Sale (POS) machines and other business equipment kept inside.

The affected traders have condemned the manner of the demolition, insisting that proper notice would have allowed them to salvage their properties. They are calling on the relevant authorities to explain the rationale behind the action and consider compensation for losses suffered.

As at press time, officials responsible for the demolition had not issued any official statement on the incident.
