Titanic life jacket sells for nearly $1 million at auction as rare artifacts draw record interest    A life jacket worn by a Titanic passenger during the 1912 disaster has sold at auction for 670,000 pounds ($906,000), far exceeding expectations as collectors continue to drive strong demand for rare artifacts from the ill-fated voyage. The preserved flotation device belonged to first-class passenger Laura Mabel Francatelli, who escaped the sinking liner aboard a lifeboat. The item, which also bears signatures from Francatelli and other survivors from the same lifeboat, was the standout piece in a sale of Titanic memorabilia and was purchased by an anonymous telephone bidder. Auction estimates had placed the life jacket between 250,000 and 350,000 pounds, but competitive bidding pushed the final price well beyond that range, including the buyer’s premium. Another major item in the same auction was a seat cushion from one of the Titanic’s lifeboats, which sold for 390,000 ...

Family Member Recounts Ordeal As Gunmen Abduct Parents, Brother In Kaduna

A family member of victims kidnapped in Millennium City, Kaduna, Muizat Yusuf, has described the terrifying night armed men invaded their home and took away her parents and younger brother.

Muizat said she hid during the attack and watched helplessly as the gunmen marched her family members into the darkness, leaving her as the only immediate member of the household behind.

The abducted victims are her mother, Lateeefat Yusuf (née Oyetunji), a teacher with the Kaduna State Ministry of Education; her father, Yahaya Yusuf, proprietor of a community-based model school; and her 21-year-old brother, AbdulGafar Yusuf.

The Yusuf family has lived in Millennium City since 2015 and is regarded by neighbours as committed contributors to education and community development in the area.

Residents say Yahaya Yusuf’s school is known for providing affordable education to children from low-income families and offering jobs to locals, including members of the Gwari and Fulani communities.

Lateeefat Yusuf is also described as a dedicated public school teacher who has spent years teaching students across the state.

Neighbours noted that the family’s emphasis on education is reflected in their children’s achievements.

One son is studying Medicine at Bayero University Kano, while AbdulGafar, who was recently abducted, graduated from the Air Force Institute of Technology and is awaiting national service.

Muizat recently gained admission to Bayero University Kano to study Nursing and is expected to resume after the fasting period.

Expressing deep concern for her brother’s wellbeing, Muizat described him as physically fragile, adding that “every second counts” as she fears for their safety in captivity.

The family says it is not assigning blame but is appealing to security agencies to intensify efforts to secure the safe release of Lateeefat Yusuf, Yahaya Yusuf and AbdulGafar Yusuf, as Muizat holds on to hope of being reunited with her loved ones.
