The Lagos State Health Facilities Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA), in collaboration with the World Bank and the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) initiative, has sustained momentum in its statewide sensitisation campaign aimed at enhancing regulatory compliance among health facilities across Lagos State.
As part of this ongoing advocacy, a town hall meeting was convened at Lagos Island Local Government to reinforce the importance of quality healthcare delivery and strict adherence to established operational standards.
The engagement targeted healthcare providers operating within and beyond Lagos Island and other relevant stakeholders, emphasising uniform compliance across the state.
Speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of HEFAMAA, Dr. (Mrs.) Abiola Idowu, represented by the Deputy Director of Health Education, Mrs. Oladunni Omonike, stated that the sensitisation initiative forms part of the Agency’s sustained efforts to promote compliance with ethical and professional benchmarks in both public and private healthcare institutions.
She explained that the Agency’s accreditation framework is designed to guarantee that every Lagos resident has access to safe, efficient, and high-quality healthcare services.
The Permanent Secretary further reaffirmed HEFAMAA’s commitment to ensuring that all healthcare establishments operate within approved regulatory guidelines, are staffed by qualified professionals, and are equipped with appropriate medical infrastructure and technology.
Also addressing participants, the Chief Nutrition Officer, Mr. Olusanya Richard, underscored the critical importance of registering all healthcare establishments operating within Lagos Island and across the state.
He noted that proper registration and routine inspections of facilities, personnel, equipment, and operational environments are essential to strengthening accountability and transparency within the healthcare sector.
Mr. Olusanya further highlighted the HEFAMAA Quick Response (QR) Code system, which is displayed in all duly registered health facilities statewide. He described the system as an accessible channel through which patients and other stakeholders can promptly report concerns or seek clarification from the Agency when necessary.
In his remarks, the Deputy Director of the National Orientation Agency, Prince Saheed Ojomu, urged attendees to take decisive action whenever they encounter instances of quackery or unethical medical practices.
He cautioned against patronising unregistered practitioners or unaccredited healthcare centres, noting that such practices can result in long-term health complications rather than sustainable recovery.
The Chairman of the Social Mobilisation Committee, Mr. Aliyu Yisa, encouraged residents of Lagos Island to overcome perceived barriers that discourage them from seeking care at properly registered healthcare facilities. He emphasised the need to prioritise safety and regulatory compliance over misconceptions or convenience.
Similarly, the Vice Chairman of the Community Development Committee (CDC), Mr. Rasheed Akinbayo, advocated for increased patronage of accredited and approved healthcare institutions. He strongly discouraged self-medication, warning that it carries significant long-term health risks and adverse consequences.
The sensitisation programme forms part of HEFAMAA’s mandate to safeguard public health by ensuring that healthcare providers across Lagos State consistently meet prescribed standards of safety, professionalism, and service delivery.
