Russian lieutenant general shot by attacker in Moscow, investigators report

Lt. Gen. Vladimir Alexeyev, a senior official in Russia’s Defense Ministry, was shot and injured Friday in an apparent ambush in a residential area of Moscow. Investigators said an unidentified assailant opened fire on a man in a building on Volokolamskoye Highway before fleeing the scene. Alexeyev was taken to a local hospital, though authorities have not yet disclosed the severity of his injuries.

Russian state media confirmed the victim’s identity and reported that a criminal investigation has been launched. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the incident has been reported to the country’s leadership and expressed wishes for Alexeyev’s swift recovery, noting that security services are actively investigating. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested, without providing evidence, that Ukraine and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy could be behind the attack, claiming it might be intended to interfere with ongoing negotiations between Washington, Kyiv, and Moscow.
