Two people were killed, and another was injured in a shooting Thursday night at South Carolina State University, prompting a campus-wide lockdown that remained in effect for hours. The gunfire was reported inside an apartment at the Hugine Suites student residential complex on the university’s campus in Orangeburg. University officials alerted students and staff to shelter in place as law enforcement responded to the scene.
Authorities have not released information about a possible suspect, and the investigation remains ongoing. The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is leading the investigation into the shooting. School officials have not publicly identified the victims or provided an update on the condition of the injured individual.
In response to the tragedy, the university canceled classes scheduled for Friday. The incident follows two separate shootings on campus in October, including one at the same Hugine Suites complex, which left one person dead and another injured. South Carolina State University has an enrollment of approximately 2,800 students.
