U.S. surfer Kurt Van Dyke was found murdered Saturday in Costa Rica, local authorities reported. Police responded around 10:50 a.m. to a call about an armed break-in at an apartment in Cahuita, Limon, a coastal province roughly 100 miles east of San Jose. Van Dyke, 66, was discovered under a bed with a sheet over his face, having been strangled and stabbed multiple times.

A woman present during the attack survived and was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries. Van Dyke, originally from Santa Cruz, California, had been a longtime resident of Costa Rica and was recognized as a pioneer in Northern California surfing. He was well known in the local surfing community, though further details about the circumstances of his death have not yet been released.
