Police in Akron were called to the scene of a fatal shooting at approximately 8:10 p.m. on Saturday, March 28th.
They were first alerted of the situation when a woman called 911 after running from the scene after being shot at by the man.
When officers arrived, they discovered a vehicle in flames. It appeared the vehicle had left the roadway and crashed into a tree line on Hemlock Street.
When officers approached the vehicle, they made a heartbreaking discovery. Inside of the burning vehicle, officers discovered a 12-year-old boy and his 47-year-old mother, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The mother was in the driver's seat.
Sadly, the young boy was pronounced deceased on scene. His mother was rushed to Cleveland Clinic Akron Medical Center, where she was ultimately pronounced deceased.
A 2-year-old boy was also inside of the vehicle, but thankfully, he was unharmed.
The woman who had placed the initial call was able to identify the suspect as 28-year-old Brandon Casto.
While searching for Casto, detectives discovered he had told friends he may be fleeing the city soon.
However, a short time after the incident, Brandon Casto turned himself in to the Meigs County Sheriff's Office.
Brandon Casto is being charged with two counts of aggravated m*rder and two counts of felonious assault.
The motive in this senseless crime has not been made public at this time.
Both the mayor, and the sheriff expressed sympathy and remorse at the loss of these lives.
