 Al Qaeda-linked insurgents establish check points around capital, call on Malians to rise up Al Qaeda-linked insurgents have called on Malians to ‌rise up against the military-led government and transition to Sharia law, as multiple security sources said the group had set up checkpoints around the capital and seized a northern town. The latest incidents come just days after Jama'at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) launched unprecedented assaultsacross the country ​on April 25 in coordination with the Tuareg-dominated rebel group the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA). Bases throughout the landlocked African ​country and near the capital Bamako were hit in those attacks, which killed Mali's defence minister. ⁠The town of Kidal was also seized.  ANAMBRA POLICE OBSERVE PATTERN OF SECURITY-RELATED COMMENTS ON PANEL REPORT OVER AWKA TRADITIONAL STOOL, PLACE OPERATIVES ON ALERT


The Anambra State Police Command, today, 20th March 2026, has observed a concerning pattern of comments and narratives following reports of the Panel of Enquiry on the Awka Traditional Stool, which may pose a threat to public peace and order. Consequently, the Command has placed operatives of the Anti-Cult Unit and the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awka Sector, on alert to proactively address any potential security concerns arising from the situation.


Additionally, all Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) and their operatives across the State, especially within Awka, have intensified security surveillance, intelligence gathering, and visibility patrols to forestall any breakdown of law and order.


To this end, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, fwc, mnips, PhD, urges all stakeholders and members of the public to exercise restraint, avoid inflammatory statements, and refrain from actions capable of inciting unrest. He emphasized that individuals or groups found engaging in acts that threaten public peace will be dealt with in accordance with the law.


The Command remains committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens.
