 Russia Backs African Demands for Colonial Reparations  Russia has thrown its support behind African and Caribbean nations seeking compensation from former colonial powers.  Speaking at the St. Petersburg International Legal Forum, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said Western countries should be held accountable for centuries of colonial exploitation and slavery.  “We are ready to actively support their endeavors to demand reparations and compensation from their former colonial powers.”  Medvedev argued that former colonial states have both the financial capacity and moral responsibility to compensate for the "colossal damage" caused by colonialism, RT reported He also called for colonialism to be officially recognized as a crime against humanity under international law. The remarks come as global momentum grows for reparations, following a UN resolution recognizing the transatlantic slave trade as “the gravest crime against humanity.”

 COAS CHARGES TROOPS TO SUSTAIN AGGRESSIVE OPERATIONS AGAINST TERRORISTS 


The Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has charged troops of Operation HADIN KAI  to remain vigilant and sustain aggressive operations in the ongoing clearance of the remnant elements of terrorists in the North East region.


This was  during an operational assessment visit to the Headquarters Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI in Maiduguri, aimed at assessing the security situation in the theatre.


The COAS emphasised the importance of effective coordination among units, robust intelligence gathering and improved operational posture to consolidate the successes already recorded and  directed troops to maintain sustained operational aggressiveness in order to deny terrorists freedom of action, particularly during the last phase of the Ramadan period and beyond.


The Theatre Commander  of the Joint Task Force North East Operation HADIN KAI, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, delivered a comprehensive operational brief to the COAS on recent operational activities, achievements and prevailing challenges within the theatre.


The Theatre Commander assured the COAS of the troops’ continued professionalism, utmost commitment and patriotism in the ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace and security in the North East and also affirmed that the troops remain resolute and undeterred by isolated setbacks in some locations, noting that the morale and fighting efficiency of personnel remain high.
