Demi Lovato Explains Why She Sang “Heart Attack” at Charity Event

Demi Lovato is setting the record straight about a performance that caught some fans off guard.

The singer, 33, performed her hit “Heart Attack” at a 2024 American Heart Association charity event, a choice that drew raised eyebrows online. During a March 19 appearance on iHeartRadio’s Elvis Duran Show, Demi clarified the story.

“They asked me to sing that song,” she said. “I flagged it beforehand and was like, ‘Um, isn’t this like not the vibe?’ But they said, ‘No, they want to hear it.’”

Fans were quick to question the irony of singing a song called “Heart Attack” at an event focused on preventing cardiovascular disease.

Demi explained, “People online were like, ‘Why did she sing that?’ And I’m like, ‘Y’all, it wasn’t me, I didn’t ask. I flagged it.’” Elvis Duran joked back, “I thought that was the worst idea ever of yours.”

A spokesperson for Demi told Entertainment Weekly that her performance was “a sensitive moment intended to champion the women in the room—the very reason why Demi was at the event,” and added, “It was actually a beautiful moment.”

Demi also reflected on why the song had personal significance. Having survived a heart attack and three strokes during a near-fatal overdose in 2018, she explained on stage, per Entertainment Tonight:

“While my next song is about the intense feelings that come with falling in love as well as heartbreak, opening yourself up, taking risks and not being afraid to do it again, this song has many parallels for me, my journey, and serves as a reminder for all of us in the room just how strong the mind-heart-body connection truly is.”

These days, Demi, who married her husband, Jutes, last May, is in a joyful place, feeling healthy in mind, body, and soul, embracing life with gratitude and resilience.
