 COAS DEEPENS VETERAN ENGAGEMENT, REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO TROOP WELFARE, ARMY TRANSFORMATION The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigerian Army to the welfare of serving and retired personnel, while advancing ongoing reforms aimed at building a more professional, adaptable, technologically enabled and combat-ready force. The COAS stated this on Thursday, 17 September 2026, when he received members of the Executive Committee of the Course 39 Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) United Welfare Association (UWA), led by its President, Air Vice Marshal Ibikunle Daramola (Rtd), on  a courtesy visit to Army Headquarters, Abuja. GUNMEN ATTEMPT TO STOP AMAECHI FROM ENTERING HIS COMMUNITY. (PHOTO).

 Gunmen attempt to stop Amaechi from entering his community


Armed thugs on Friday attempted to prevent former Minister of Transportation, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, from entering his hometown, Ubima, in Ikwerre Local Government Area, Rivers State.


Security personnel attached to Amaechi’s convoy reportedly thwarted the attack, despite sporadic gunfire.


The incident occurred just hours after the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Secretariat in Ubima was destroyed and set on fire by armed men.


Videos circulating on social media showed gunmen blocking a major road in the community and firing sporadically.


Amaechi is scheduled to visit his hometown today to officially register with the ADC.


This is the second reported attack on ADC members in the state in recent months.


In February, 2026, party members were allegedly attacked in Igwuruta Community in the same local government during a sensitization programme.


The Rivers State Police Command is yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
