Dutch referee Rob Dieperink dies weeks after removal from World Cup officiating list Dutch referee Rob Dieperink has died at the age of 38, weeks after FIFA removed him from its list of officials for the World Cup. The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) confirmed his death in a statement, saying it was “shocked and deeply saddened” by the news. His cause of death has not been disclosed. Dieperink was arrested in April by the Metropolitan Police in the United Kingdom following a report of an alleged sexual assault involving a teenage boy in London.  Iran says it will skip World Cup in United States due to US attacks, sports minister says

With the World Cup just three months away, Iranian officials announced that their national team will not participate in the tournament.

Iran’s sports minister, Ahmad Donyamali, said the team cannot compete because of U.S. attacks. He told Iranian state television, “Due to the wicked acts they have done against Iran – they have imposed two wars on us over just eight or nine months and have killed and martyred thousands of our people – definitely it’s not possible for us to take part in the World Cup.” Earlier, Mehdi Taj, head of Iran’s Football Federation, also questioned whether the team would attend.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino spoke with President Donald Trump earlier this week and confirmed that the Iranian team is welcome to compete. Iran has been drawn into Group G and is scheduled to play New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles on June 15 and 21, followed by a match against Egypt in Seattle on June 26. The tournament, co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, runs from June 11 through July 19.
