Jane Fallon Shares Post-Surgery Update Following Breast Cancer Diagnosis
Bestselling author Jane Fallon has updated fans on her breast cancer journey, revealing she has successfully undergone surgery to remove a tumor.
The 65-year-old shared the news on Instagram on Monday, describing it as a “big day” and explaining that she had both the tumor and a small margin of healthy tissue removed.
“I had my op this morning,” Jane wrote. “I’m feeling remarkably fine, which is possibly the drugs, and they might also explain why I’m cross-eyed in photo five. Everything went very well, apparently.”
She added that she celebrated with a cup of tea and some downtime surrounded by her and Ricky Gervais’s beloved pets.
Photos posted alongside the message showed Jane recovering at home. She joked about her cat, Pickle, who immediately settled on her, calling her “the best nurse ever.”
Jane also mentioned the “popsox” she had to wear for 48 hours, humorously noting she might start a new trend.
While her surgery went smoothly, Jane said there is a small chance she may need another operation.
“I just have to wait 8–10 days to confirm that they’ve got it all and the margins are clear,” she explained, adding that for now she’s focused on rest and recovery.
Earlier this month, Jane shared her initial diagnosis, revealing it came after a routine mammogram. “I had no symptoms, but the brilliant radiographer spotted something iffy and sent me for further tests, which led to a biopsy,” she said. She described the follow-up process, including additional mammograms, biopsies, and an MRI to precisely locate the tumor.
“I’ve had incredible care throughout,” Jane continued. “I’m keeping things simple with audiobooks and jigsaws for now, while Nurse Pickle watches over me and Dr. Eric does the professional stuff.”
Jane’s career began in television before she published her bestselling novel Getting Rid of Matthew in 2007. Since then, she has written 14 books, including Worst. Idea. Ever., Faking Friends, Just Got Real, and Queen Bee.
Jane has been in a relationship with comedian Ricky Gervais since 1982, after meeting at University College London.
The couple moved in together two years later and now live in Hampstead, West London, with their pets.
Earlier this year, Jane shared personal reflections, stating she has no regrets about her decision not to have children.
