The National Executive Council (NEC) of the Labour Party has approved May 23, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary election, as part of the party's timetable for primaries leading to the 2027 general elections.
This was announced by Ken Asogwa, Senior Special Adviser on Media to the Interim National Chairman, in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Asogwa, the timetable was endorsed during a statutory NEC meeting monitored by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in line with the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines.
The approved schedule includes:
- Submission of the party's membership register to INEC on April 15, 2026.
- Governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly primaries on May 15, 2026.
- Presidential primary on May 23, 2026.
The NEC also ratified the national leadership's conduct of ward congresses on March 26, local government congresses on March 28, and state congresses on March 31, 2026. The national convention has been scheduled for April 11, 2026.
The council reviewed recent internal developments, including an alleged invasion of the party secretariat by hoodlums reportedly sponsored by rogue elements. Following a report from the Peace, Reconciliation and Disciplinary Committee, chaired by BOT Secretary Salisu Mohammed, the Board of Trustees suspended certain members for alleged indiscipline, anti-party activities, and complicity in the secretariat desecration.
NEC further endorsed the ongoing expansion of the membership register through a hybrid system combining digital e-registration and manual registration in rural areas. This initiative aims to modernize the party's database, promote participatory democracy, and improve transparency and efficiency, in accordance with the Electoral Act 2026.
To ensure administrative continuity, the council resolved that all vacancies in party structures be filled by appointing interim leaders, who will serve in acting capacities until substantive congresses are held as per the party constitution and timetable.
Members were urged to use the party's internal dispute resolution mechanisms to address grievances, fostering unity and reducing conflicts.
The NEC welcomed a recent Federal High Court judgment affirming Senator Nenadi Usman as Interim National Chairman. It passed a vote of confidence in her leadership, the Interim National Working Committee, the Board of Trustees, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) leadership, the Trade Union Congress (TUC) leadership, and Governor Alex Otti of Abia State.
Asogwa commended INEC for its prompt compliance with the court pronouncement.
