 Flights suspended to Ethiopian holy town of Lalibela as fighting expands Flights to the historic Ethiopian town of Lalibela ​were suspended on Thursday due to fighting nearby, seven sources said, as residents in the Tigray region to the north stocked up on food and ‌cash, fearing that renewed fighting could trigger another major war. Tigrayan forces seized three local airports and launched attacks in Afar and Amhara regions with allies there this week, in the most serious escalation since a devastating 2020-22 war against Ethiopian government troops. In its first public comments on the fighting, Ethiopia's army said on Thursday that it had foiled the attacks and killed, wounded or captured more than 500 enemy fighters. The United Nations ​and the European Union called for restraint and a return to the African Union-brokered peace process that had ended a conflict that killed hundreds of thousands of people.  Lagos State Hosts Reception in Honour of Student-Athletes’ Historic Feat at World School Games and African Youth Games


Lagos State Government today hosted a special reception at the Lagos State House, Marina in honour of its outstanding student-athletes who recorded remarkable achievements at the World School Games and African Youth Games, bringing pride and global recognition to the state and Nigeria at large.


In his opening remarks, the Director General,  Lagos State Sports Commission, Mr  Lekan Fatodu, commended the athletes for their resilience, discipline, and dedication. He noted that their achievements reflect the success of ongoing efforts to develop grassroots sports and position Lagos as a hub for sporting excellence.


Speaking at the event, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu praised the athletes for their outstanding performance, describing their success as a proud moment for Lagos State. He emphasized that their historic feat is a testament to hard work, determination, and the immense potential of young people in the state.


The Governor reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to continued investment in youth development, sports infrastructure, and strategic partnerships that will create more opportunities for young talents to excel on the global stage.


The reception concluded with the presentation of commendations, as Lagos State celebrated its young champions whose achievements will continue to inspire future generations.
