 Flights suspended to Ethiopian holy town of Lalibela as fighting expands Flights to the historic Ethiopian town of Lalibela ​were suspended on Thursday due to fighting nearby, seven sources said, as residents in the Tigray region to the north stocked up on food and ‌cash, fearing that renewed fighting could trigger another major war. Tigrayan forces seized three local airports and launched attacks in Afar and Amhara regions with allies there this week, in the most serious escalation since a devastating 2020-22 war against Ethiopian government troops. In its first public comments on the fighting, Ethiopia's army said on Thursday that it had foiled the attacks and killed, wounded or captured more than 500 enemy fighters.  Meta to lay off several hundred employees amid AI refocus, company offers some new roles

Meta is laying off several hundred employees across multiple divisions, including Facebook, global operations, recruiting, sales, and its virtual reality branch, Reality Labs, as the company shifts focus toward artificial intelligence. Some affected employees are being offered new roles within the company, though some positions may require relocation.

The layoffs follow previous reductions in January, when more than 1,000 Reality Labs positions were cut, and several VR studios were closed, impacting about 10% of the hardware division that produces Quest headsets and Horizon Worlds. Meta continues to invest heavily in generative AI, bringing on talent and acquiring startup Dreamer, with co-founder Hugo Barra returning to lead AI efforts. In addition, the company announced a new stock option incentive program for top executives, intended to retain leadership as Meta pursues its aggressive AI strategy.
